David Lewis is a Professor of Anthropology and Development at the Department of International Development. His research spans the fields of development studies and anthropology, primarily focusing on people’s interactions with development actors and processes. He conducts extensive fieldwork in Bangladesh, examining governance, policy, and civil society, as well as in Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Palestine, and Uganda. David is the Principal Investigator for a project exploring small business advice-giving in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He is also completing a collaborative project on conflict and deprivation in Palestine. He takes a keen interest in the representation of development in popular culture, including music, fiction, and film. Moreover, he contributes to the LSE South Asia Centre as a Faculty Advisory Group member. David’s work has been published in renowned journals such as World Development, Development and Change, and Current Anthropology. He is the author of several books and has co-edited significant volumes in the field. He has advised various development agencies, including UNDP, IFAD, Oxfam, Sida, and DFID.
